The road from the southest comes into Venasque along fairly level ground, but from the village you can see the deep, forested valleys and rocky cliffs flanking the sides of the village. Venasque is built on a rocky spur and dominates the Carpentras valley. This authentic village of Provence, registered as " on of the most beautiful villages of France" includes various shops, artist studios, restaurants and hotels, and also o tourist office. A lot of flowers are decorating the narrow streets. The ruins right in the village include thick walls connecting three towers from 12th century ("Saracen" towers), somewhat truncated, and two arched entrance "portes". The 13th century church with its baptistery from the 5th century and its high bell tower and gargoyles is famous and worth a visit. Venasque has a long roman and medevial history. The Bishop of Carpentras established his diocese here from 580 to 982, following the barbarian invasions of Carpentras. Control passed to Thézan-Venasque in the 14th century by marriage, and was maintened until the 18th century. office du tourisme - tél : +(33) 490 66 11 66 |
